A young boy is raised within the confines of a small shed.
Director: Lenny Abrahamson
"I was excited when the news came out that ROOM is going to be made into a movie. The trailer, most especially. Room was adapted from the book written by Emma Donoghue that revolves around the journey and life of a young mother and her son in a small room. Honestly, I didn’t get to finish the book (My bad!) when I decided to watch the film and even with its promise of being a tough watch, it never faltered my enthusiasm to just go for it.
You will learn early in the movie that Joy, who is the young mom, was kidnapped when she was a teenager by a man called Old Nick and got pregnant along the way with her son named Jack. (Long story short, Jack is the result of a rape act done by Old Nick to Joy.) Jack knows nothing other than the stuff that they have inside the room – table, chair, television, blanket, fridge etc. But before I divulge more than I should, Jack basically started from not knowing nothing into knowing everything that lead him and his mother to their escape. An escape that will put you in the edge of your seat or maybe fall even.
What I didn’t expect was that after the escape, the taste of freedom wasn’t easy as it should be. Freedom was something that they both craved but they both hated at the same time. It was then I realized that comfort zone no matter how harmful it can be to you will always be something you’d want for yourself to have to avoid conflict, confusion and the emotional rollercoaster.
Room is gripping and heart wrenching to watch. Even with Jack and Joy together in the screen for almost the whole movie, it still gave the audience the depth of the story that we all needed to see. It’s a treasure and a must-watch."
